Do you want greater health and longevity?

Then lift weights because no other form of exercise does more to help prevent the inevitable physical decline that occurs as we age.

Here are five health and longevity benefits of strength training:

  1. Increase strength: Strength is our body’s ability to produce force against resistance. Our ability to walk, climb stairs, lift objects and maintain our balance are all underpinned by our physical strength. The stronger we are, the easier it is to do these things and remain independent as we age.
  2. Reduce sarcopenia: Age-related muscle loss begins around our mid-forties and accelerates as we get older. Strength training helps slow the rate of muscular atrophy, which in turn reduces the risk of falls, frailty and obesity.
  3. Prevent osteoporosis: Weight-bearing resistance exercise stimulates bone remodelling and can help maintain or improve bone mineral density. This can lessen the risk of bone fractures, which increase as we get older.
  4. Improve metabolic markers: Strength training can improve insulin sensitivity, blood glucose control, blood pressure and body composition, helping reduce the risk of metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes.
  5. Alleviate musculoskeletal disorders: Regular resistance training strengthens muscles, tendons, ligaments and connective tissues. This can improve posture and joint mobility, helping to alleviate common complaints such as neck, back and shoulder pain.

Many people think weight training is a young man’s game.

While undoubtedly it is most popular with that particular demographic, the benefits of strength extend to everyone and become particularly important as we reach mid-life and start to age.
