Most people assume you need more motivation to train consistently.

They seek out inspiration, follow fitness influencers on Instagram, or wait until life gets ‘less busy’ and they feel ready to get started. But after 15 years as a personal trainer, helping over 150 people build consistent workout routines, I’ve learned that the truth is something different. The problem often isn’t motivation.

It’s uncertainty.

When you don’t have a plan, every workout involves decisions. What exercises should I do? How many sets and reps? Which muscle groups should I train? How heavy should I lift? All these questions create uncertainty, which can make you feel anxious and kill your motivation to train.

A structured workout plan removes much of this uncertainty.

You know exactly what exercises to perform, how many sets and reps to complete, and how to progress your workouts safely over time. When you’re busy with work, the last thing you need is another set of decisions to make. What you need is a plan that provides clarity, focus and direction.

When you know exactly what to do, you feel more confident about doing it.

When you feel confident, you take action. When you take action, you feel motivated. Where most people go wrong is expecting to feel motivated before they take action. But the uncertainty of not knowing what to do can kill their motivation. They never take action and remain stuck.

So before you go searching for motivation, remove the guesswork. Find a programme, schedule your sessions in the diary, and make sure you know exactly what you need to do before you walk into the gym. Remember, consistency doesn’t come from waiting until you feel motivated.

It comes from having a plan that makes taking action easier, even when you don’t.
